Three things at once
Cape Coral pavers face a combination most of Florida does not. The base is sand, which drains fast but offers less resistance to washout. The water table is high, so there is less depth for water to disappear into. And with 400-plus miles of canals, salt-laden air reaches a very large share of the city, not just the row of houses facing the water.
What the salt actually does
Salt crystallises in the joint and at the paver edge, and the repeated cycle of wetting, drying and crystallising works the joint material loose. It is mechanical rather than chemical for the most part — the crystals do the damage by expanding. This is why joints closest to the water empty first, and why a driveway two streets back can look noticeably better than one on the canal.
Why washout compounds
An empty joint is not just cosmetic. Joint sand transfers load between pavers, so a field with empty joints stops behaving as one surface. Pavers start to rock, edges knock together and chip, and a chipped paver cannot be re-set cleanly. The repair escalates from "re-sand the joints" to "lift, replace and re-lay" — for want of a bag of sand.
What to do about it
Shorten the interval rather than change the product. Polymeric sand helps and sealing helps, but neither makes a canal-front driveway behave like an inland one. Two years is a realistic re-sand interval near the water; three is fine further in. Checking the joints once a year takes five minutes — if you can push a screwdriver into a joint to any depth, it is time.
